South Street Seaport Museum
The South Street Seaport Museum, home to the Shipcraft Guild, is located on the site of what was once this country's leading port and is now a twelve-square-block historic district in lower Manhattan. The Museum is home to the nation's largest fleet of privately maintained historic vessels representative of the range of craft typical of the kinds of cargo ships and working vessels that once filled New York Harbor in the 19th and early 20th century.

Museum of the City of New York
The Museum of the City of New York's maritime collection contains approximately 100 scale models and 40 shipbuilder's half-hull models, nautical instruments, shipping paraphernalia, an archive of naval and mercantile documents and shipping logs. The collection also contains an impressive group of carved figureheads and deck ornaments dating from the nineteenth century including the figureheads of Andrew Jackson and Hercules from the U.S. frigate Constitution.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy / The American Merchant Marine Museum
The American Merchant Marine Museum serves as a repository for the USMMA's extensive and valuable collection of marine art, ship models and nautical artifacts.

New York Maritime Academy

Maritime Industry Museum at Fort Schuyler
The Fort Schuyler Museum is housed on the campus of the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College at historic Fort Schuyler, The Bronx, New York. The museum was established in 1986 and offers one of the largest collections of maritime industry materials in the nation.

Hudson River Museum
Located in Yonkers, the Hudson River Museum has long been an important center for the arts in lower Westchester and is one of the best places to view works inspired by the Hudson.

Hudson River Maritime Museum
Located in Kingston, NY, the Hudson River Maritime Museum is the only museum in New York State exclusively preserving the maritime history of the Hudson River, its tributaries, and the industries that developed around it. Indoor and outdoor exhibits on Hudson River maritime history, a gift shop, waterfront special events, and boat rides to the historic Rondout Lighthouse are available at the museum.

Intrepid Museum
Located on the West side of Manhattan om Pier 86, 12th Ave. & 46th Street. The Intrepid museum includes the restored WWII aircraft carrier USS Intrepid and submarine USS Growler. The museum also includes over 25 aircraft. The Intrepid is also host to the annual Fleet Week.

Clearwater Sloop
The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater organization conducts environmental education, advocacy programs and celebrations. Group activities center around the Clearwater, a replica of a 19th century Hudson River Sloop. The organization hosts the Clearwater Great Hudson River Revival each year over the Father's Day weekend.

Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum
Located in Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island, the museum offers a fully equipped 19th century whaleboat complete with original gear. The Museum also contains whaling history exhibits, a scrimshaw collection, and whale conservation exhibits.

East End Seaport Museum and Marine Foundation
The Maritime Museum is located in the the old train station at 3rd St., adjacent to the Shelter Island North Ferry Dock in Greenport, NY. The museum boasts an array of exhibits on the maritime heritage of the area, including displays on the menhaden fishing industry, the oyster industry, lighthouse lenses, model ships of the USS Ohio and the USS Holland, a submarine mock-up, and more.

Neversink Valley Area Museum
A private, non-profit organization, the Museum occupies historic canal-era buildings in D&H Canal Park right on the Neversink River. The museum provides various educational activities for children and adults throughout the year.

New Netherland Museum
The museum operates a replica of Henry Hudson's Half Moon. The museum is currently looking for a permanent home.

Waterfront Museum and Showboat Barge
Located in Brooklyn, the Waterfront Museum's mission is to provide waterfront access, promote historic preservation, and foster an understanding of the NY Harbor as a waterway carrying commerce and commuters as well as a means for culture and recreation.

National Maritime Historical Society
Located in Peekskill, NY. The NMHS began in 1963 as a group of maritime enthusiasts working to save the bark Kaiulani and return her to the US from the Philippines. NMHS publishes Sea History quarterly magazine and the Sea History Gazette, a bi-monthly newsletter. Current efforts spearheaded by NMHS include Project Experiment, the plan to build a replica of the Hudson River sloop, Experiment, that sailed to China in 1785, and a unique public/private partnership to save the Wapama, the last Pacific steam schooner. The NMHS has a research library.

Area Ship & Boat Rides and Tours:

MV Commander
MV Commander has the distinction of being the last operating vessel that served in the U.S. Navy in World War I, and joins the battleship TEXAS and the battlecruiser OLYMPIC, as the only remaining ships from that era. MV Commander offers cruises on the Hudson River. You can learn more about the Commander at the Historic Naval Ships Association website.

Other Area Clubs & Organizations:

Ship Model Society of Northern New Jersey
The Ship Model Society of Northern New Jersey, with more than 80 members, is the only association in the Garden State dedicated to historically accurate, scale ship modeling.

Empire State Model Mariners
The Empire State Model Mariners was established as a club in 1988. The club is devoted to not only the centuries old tradition of recreating scale models, but also to further the hobby of model ship building.

Westchester Aero Modelers
The Westchester Radio Aero Modelers, Inc. is one of the leading organizations in R/C, the radio control hobby. Although the club's main focus is on aircraft modeling, they also encourage the related hobbies of model cars and boats. WRAM sponsors a major trade show in White Plains, NY each year.

National & International Maritime and Nautical Resources:

Nautical Research Guild
The non-profit Nautical Research Guild, founded in 1948, has an international membership of historians, ship model makers, artists and laypeople who interpret a common interest in ships from many viewpoints. The Guild has published the prestigeous Nautical Research Journal for fifty years, and is one of the oldest and largest volunteer-based marine societies in the United States.

Scale Ship Modelers Association of North America
The SSMA is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988 for the purpose of promoting the hobby of radio control and static ship modeling. SSMA encourages all types of model boating in electric, sail, and steam power as well as the building of plastic and wooden static models. SSMA is comprised of clubs and individuals throughout North America and acts as a clearing house for information concerning the modeling industry. SSMA works with the modeling industry to address the needs of the modeling community.

Ship Modeler's Association
The Ship Modelers Association (SMA) is the largest ship modeling club in California, and one of the largest in the nation. SMA sponsors the Western Ship Model Conference and Exhibit held on-board the RMS Queen Mary.

Seaways' Ships in Scale Magazine
Seaways' hosts the Information Seaway, one of the first ship modeling sites on the internet. Seaways also sponsors the Seaways' Shipmodeling List, a moderated email forum for discussing and advancing the art of scale ship modeling.

Ship Modelers Forum
An unmoderated email forum for discussing ship modeling interests., geared more for the novice modeler.

Model Shipwrights
Originally intended as a discussion and Email list for scratch builders of sailing ship models working to the plans of Jean Boudriot and Harold Hahn, this group has since expanded into other areas. Model Shipwrights publishes the on-line magazine Warships to Workboats and maintains a list of World Attractions.

John has been maintained this Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) website for over ten years. He has compled questions and answers from the many ship modeling mailing lists.

John's Nautical and Boatbuilding Page
There are a lot of excellent nautical websites out there, but John Kohnen has compiled what is arguably the most extensive nautical related material on the Internet. You'll find his Mother of All Maritime Links especially useful -- if a site's not listed here, it probably doesn't exist!
